About CEB
What identifies us?
The Center for Bioethics Studies (CEB) was born from the development of Bioethics in Portugal. Its origins date back to 1986, when an informal think tank began meeting to discuss the ethical challenges posed by biotechnologies applied to human life.
Officially founded on December 9, 1988, CEB became the first bioethics institution in Portugal. It brought together doctors, lawyers, priests, academics, and philosophers, united by a humanistic and personalist vision of science, oriented towards the protection of the dignity of the human person.
The creation of the CEB and the publication of the "Bioethics Notebooks" marked decisive moments in the consolidation of Bioethics in Portugal. Over the years, despite the emergence of other organizations and changes in the national landscape, the CEB has maintained academic and social relevance, reinforced by international collaborations, particularly between Portugal and Brazil.
Today, CEB seeks to revitalize its mission, reaffirming its commitment to a humanistic bioethical reflection that is rigorous and open to contemporary challenges.
